History
Martin R. Steinberg, MD was the Director of The Mount Sinai Hospital from 1948-1969 and served as the Assistant Director from 1945-48. Originally trained as an otolaryngologist, after World War II, Steinberg spent his career in hospital administration. He presided over the hospital during its transition from a general hospital to an academic medical center. During his tenure, the hospital grew from 680 to 1,350 beds and 26 buildings and increased in staff by 233 percent. In the early 1960s, Steinberg worked with Congressional leaders to create Medicare. He retired from Mount Sinai in 1969 and became a consultant.
