      Nursing School Commencement

      An image showing the beginning of the graduation ceremony of the Class of 1961 from The Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. The event was held in the Hospital Gardens, along the former footprint of 100th Street. The graduates are wearing their white nursing uniforms and graduate caps. In the background center, the Klingenstein Clinical Center is under construction.

      Caption on reverse reads: "Mount Sinai School of Medicine's class of 1977, the first in the Annenberg Building, listen to speaker during opening session. Faculty members in the front row are (l. to r.): Dr. Fenton Schaffner, Acting Chairman, Department of Medicine; Dr. Tibor Barka, Chairman, Department of Anatomy; Dr. Thomas C. Chalmers, who succeeded Dr. Hans Popper October 1 as President of the Medical Center and Dean of the School of Medicine; and Dr. Edwin D. Kilbourne, Chairman, Department of Microbiology."

      Ethel Merman, star of stage and screen, also served on the volunteer team at Roosevelt Hospital for many years. She is seen here standing in the ivy garden, which is dedicated it to the memory of her parents, Edward and Agnes Gardner Zimmerman, "given in loving remembrance by their many friends."
