James, George
US AA187 · Collection · 1961-1974

These are the office files of George James, MD, the President and Dean of Mount Sinai from 1965 until his sudden death in 1972. Hans Popper, MD, PhD was appointed Acting Dean and President when James died. Dr. Popper maintained his office in the Atran Building and came to the President’s Office on the 8th floor of 1184 Fifth Avenue each day to conduct whatever business was necessary. This served to provide continuity in the files and many of the folders extend to 1973 when Thomas C. Chalmers was appointed Dean and President. His files form a separate series.

An oversize framed photograph of the 1965 New York City Board of Health members at a conference table was placed in the Map Case Drawer 5, Group 15. Shown are Samuel Z. Levine, MD, Lewis Thomas, MD, George James, MD, Louis Loeb, LLB, and John Heller, MD
