George Blumenthal was a member of the Board of Trustees of The Mount Sinai Hospital. He contributed more to Mount Sinai Hospital’s upbuilding, both materially and in a constructive and spiritual way, than any other one person ever connected with this institution. An immigrant from Germany, Blumenthal entered the field of banking and became senior partner at Lazard Frères. Elected to the Board of Trustees in 1892, he served as Mount Sinai's President from 1911 to 1938 and as its distinguished President Emeritus until his death. His financial gifts amounted to well over one million dollars, serving many varied purposes, purchasing land, funding the construction of several buildings, donating to cover or reduce annual deficits, establishing endowment funds for general purposes—all these helped to keep the Hospital operating on its established high standard. His originality and determination changed the very pattern of fundraising, for other institutions as well as for Mount Sinai. The policy, which he initiated despite skepticism, of financing philanthropic enterprise by outright gifts rather than by loans, was revolutionary in character and far-reaching in its effects. He also served on the Board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. George Blumenthal was instrumental in creating the foundations of Mount Sinai today and shaping the progressive policies of the Hospital.
