Savio L.C. Woo, PhD was a professor of the Department of Gene and Cell Medicine, and the founding Director of the Institute of Gene Therapy and Molecular Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 1996 to 2015. Dr. Woo has worldwide notoriety as an expert in molecular human genetics and gene therapy and is considered a “giant” in the field. His work directly contributed to the principles used today regarding how to transfer genes into cells.

He received his PhD in biochemistry in 1971 from the University of Washington and went on to complete a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He worked at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas as professor of cell biology from 1984 to 1996 and as founding director of Baylor College’s Center for Gene Therapy from 1991 to 1995. Dr. Woo became a professor of the Department Gene and Cell Medicine and the founding director of the Insititute of Gene Therapy and Molecular Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 1996 to 2015. In 2015, he also retired as the founding chair of Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy’s (ACGT) Scientific Advisory Council, established in 2001.

Dr. Woo was also the president of the American Society for Gene and Cell Therapy from 1999 to 2000 and was chairman of a National Institute of Health Study Section on Gene Therapy Vector Development. Throughout his career he published over 350 articles, reviews, and book chapters.
