This collection was assembled by the Arthur H. Aufses, Jr., MD Archives to capture the web presence of the Mount Sinai Health System. Started in 2015, additional sites are added as they are created or discovered by the Archives.
While this collection aims to capture information as broadly as possible, there are a few notable groupings of subject areas. Perhaps most significantly are the websites related to the Mount Sinai Health System's response to the COVID-19 pandemic -- with much of MSHS's communications going online in March 2020, websites related to this effort are crucial for understanding pandemic response. Additionally, there are also a significant number of websites related to student life at the Icahn School of Medicine, with many of the sites created by the students themselves. Finally, there are a number of blogs and social media websites, including YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, which documents day-to-day outreach by MSHS.

* In 2019 the Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (HHEAR) Data Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai was established by NIEHS as a continuation of the CHEAR Data Center expanding to include health outcomes at all ages. The goal is to provide the research community access to statistical analyses and to make that data publicly available as a means to improve our knowledge of the comprehensive effects of environmental exposures on human health throughout the life course. The HHEAR Data Center goals are to catalyze new scientific insight from the colocation, integration and advanced statistical and data science analysis of multimodal data sets. It provides a data repository for storing epidemiologic and biomarker data for CHEAR and HHEAR research studies, publicly available deidentified datasets downloadable for external users, and a publicly accessible HHEAR ontology that provides a common vocabulary with unambiguous definitions of concepts and variables across studies to allow for pooling of studies.

The Beth Israel Hospital was founded in New York City in 1889 and opened its first inpatient location in 1891. Initially established to serve the Lower East Side's growing population of Eastern European Jewish immigrants, the Hospital grew into a major charitable hospital serving patients of all backgrounds. In the 1890s it was based out of existing structures on the Lower East Side, but in 1902 the Hospital moved to a purpose-built hospital building on Jefferson and Cherry Streets. Construction on the Dazian Pavilion, the first building of Beth Israel's main campus on 17th Street on Stuyvesant Square, began in 1922. The building was completed in 1929. In the early 1930s Beth Israel affiliated with the Jewish Maternity Hospital, and in 1946, following the gradual absorption of the Maternity Hospital by the obstetrics department of Beth Israel, the two institutions were legally consolidated into a single entity under the Beth Israel Hospital Association name. In the ensuing years the Hospital affiliated with numerous other medical institutions and expanded its 17th Street campus through the construction of new buildings and the purchase of adjacent structures. In 1965, following Beth Israel's acquisition of the neighboring Manhattan General Hospital, the institution became known as the Beth Israel Medical Center. In 1997, Beth Israel merged with St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and the Long Island College Hospital to form the Greater Metropolitan Health System, whose name was changed to Continuum Health Partners in 1998. Following the merger of Continuum Health Partners and The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2013, Beth Israel became a part of the newly established Mount Sinai Health System. It was renamed Mount Sinai Beth Israel the following year.

The Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice is the clinical practice arena of the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine of Mount Sinai. It was created as the Faculty Practice Associates (FPA) in 1984 when the Mount Sinai Medical Service Plan was re-named. The Medical Service Plan became operational in 1973 to govern the practice arrangements of salaried faculty. Its creation led to the phasing out of the Geographic Full-time Faculty rank. In 2012, the FPA was renamed to the Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice.
From the Mount Sinai Doctors website: "Mount Sinai Doctors is an organization of hundreds of clinical relationships and multispecialty services that expand the Mount Sinai Health System’s footprint beyond the eight main hospital campuses into the greater New York City area. The goal of Mount Sinai Doctors is to provide an easy way for our patients to take advantage of the expert care our physicians provide, without having to venture far from the areas in which they live and work. The geography of Mount Sinai Doctors is continually growing and currently encompasses many locations throughout Manhattan, the Five Boroughs, New Jersey, Long Island, Westchester County, and Florida. The board certified physicians of Mount Sinai Doctors are able to provide both general and specialty care without the need to come to one of our main hospital campuses. Should the situation arise where additional intervention is necessary, Mount Sinai Doctors physicians have direct access to the tertiary and quaternary care of the Mount Sinai Health System’s foremost specialists in a number of fields."

Mount Sinai Medical Legal Partnership (MSMLP) arranges for free legal services to the Mount Sinai Health System’s most vulnerable and needy patients to prevent and remedy the legal and social issues that often contribute to poor health. By addressing the non-medical determinants of illness, MSMLP is working to improve the overall health of our community and end the vicious cycle in which illness and disease are both cause and consequence of poverty. MSMLP integrates lawyers into the health care team to address unmet legal needs that may be affecting a patient’s health. The most common cases relate to income maintenance, housing, education and employment, legal status and personal and family stability. Many of our patients living at or below the poverty line seldom have access to a lawyer to address such critical matters.

The Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens was established in 1999 when The Mount Sinai Medical Center purchased Western Queens Community Hospital, the former Astoria General Hospital. Astoria General Hospital was established in 1949 in a building that had been built in 1895 to house the (institutionally unrelated) Astoria Hospital; prior to the founding of Astoria General the building had been used as a private sanatorium. In 1952 a modern hospital building was built on an adjacent lot. The hospital operated for over fifty years as a proprietary general hospital serving Astoria and nearby neighborhoods in Queens before affiliating with Mount Sinai in 1993 and changing its name to Western Queens Community Hospital.

New York Eye and Ear Infirmary was established in 1820 to meet the eye care needs of New Yorkers, especially the working poor. Although ears had been treated at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary since its inception, the institution was originally incorporated under the title of The New York Eye Infirmary on March 22, 1822. In 1864, the otology department was given official recognition and the name was legally changed to The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. In 1873, the throat department was added. Although teaching had been conducted at The Infirmary from the very beginning, the School of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, chartered by the State Legislature, was officially founded in 1890. Thus began the first Otolaryngology resident training program in the United States. In 1999, the Infirmary joined Continuum Health Partners. This department was established in 1965 as the Department of Community Medicine by George James, the Dean and President of Mount Sinai. In 1997 the department's name was changed to the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine. In July 2009, it changed again to the Department of Preventive Medicine. In August 2016, with a new chairman, it became the Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health.
In 2024, the name was changed to the Department of Environmental Medicine and Climate Science. From the name change announcement: "Today, the most pressing environmental issue around the world is climate change. The new name reflects our dedication to understanding the role that climate science plays in health and disease...As severe weather events become more common, air pollutants increase, and insidious temperature/humidity changes boost levels of airborne allergens, flooding/mold growth, and vector-borne diseases (e.g., Lyme disease and Zika virus), we must learn how our health care system can adapt to better serve our patients. To accomplish this goal, the Department of Environmental Medicine and Climate Science has developed cutting-edge data science technologies that measure and predict climate, flooding, and air pollution using NASA satellite data and local monitoring systems. We combine these with electronic health records and public health databases using machine learning."

* This site documents the activities of the Precision Immunology Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine (PrIISM) during the COVID-19 pandemic. PrIISM faculty, led by the institute’s Director, Dr. Miriam Merad, immediately began dedicated scientific studies aimed at finding better ways to treat COVID-19 and reduce the mortality rate of the disease. This includes comprehensive studies of the blood, cells, and tissues of infected patients and work towards novel or repurposed therapies and vaccines to treat COVID-19. The PrIISM team also worked to understand why some people, including some children, develop more severe COVID, how to treat people better to reduce disease severity, and to identify the factors that cause long COVID, in which some individuals retain disease symptoms for months after initial infection.
