Administrative history
The Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens was established in 1999 when The Mount Sinai Medical Center purchased Western Queens Community Hospital, the former Astoria General Hospital. Astoria General Hospital was established in 1949 in a building that had been built in 1895 to house the (institutionally unrelated) Astoria Hospital; prior to the founding of Astoria General the building had been used as a private sanatorium. In 1952 a modern hospital building was built on an adjacent lot. The hospital operated for over fifty years as a proprietary general hospital serving Astoria and nearby neighborhoods in Queens before affiliating with Mount Sinai in 1993 and changing its name to Western Queens Community Hospital.
