The Medical Board of The Mount Sinai Hospital was formed in January, 1872 at a meeting at Willard Parker's house. Dr. Parker was a Consulting Surgeon to the Hospital. He and other members of the Medical Staff met to discuss Hospital affairs, as Mount Sinai was moving to new, larger quarters at Lexington Avenue and 66th Street soon. The resolution that they passed at this meeting stated: "That the Board of Directors be notified that the Medical Staff of The Mount Sinai Hospital have organized for the consideration of all matters appertaining to the Medical Management of the Hospital." At their first meeting, the Medical Board developed the plan that led, after the Directors' approval, to the creation of the House Staff.
Standing committees were soon formed, including one on examinations for prospective house staff members, a Dispensary Committe, a Conference Committee to confer with the Board of Directors, a School of Nursing Committee, and an executive committee on medial matters pertaining to the Hospital. Many other committees formed over the years, only to disband as their usefulness waned. Indeed, a study of the committees and subcommitees over the years would provide a summary of the history of the medical administration of the institution.
