The Department of Medical Education was formed when Mount Sinai School of Medicine was created. The original name was the Department of Laboratory Education. This department is responsible for curriculum oversight in Mount Sinai School of Medicine and student affairs. In 1975 the Department of Library Science was disbanded and the Levy Library also became a part of the Medical Education Department. Over the years, the Medical Education Department has included the Office of Student Affairs, the Morchand Center for Clinical Competence, the Medical Student Research Office, the student run East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP), the Center for Excellence in Youth Education, the Page and William Black School of Continuing Medical Education, Bioethics Education, and Audiovisual Services.
Content and structure elements
Scope and content
This collection was created from files gathered from Trustee and administrative offices over the years as The Mount Sinai Hospital and then Mount Sinai School of Medicine sought to administer the institutionally owned cemetery plots over time. Initially plots to bury indigent patients were donated to the Hospital by Jewish congregations and benevolent societies. In June 1878, land was acquired in Cypress Hills Cemetery for Mount Sinai through the efforts of Samuel M. Schafer, Esq. There were 110 lots, measuring 20 x 20. Most of the 20th century correspondence relates to the management and upkeep of the cemetery plots.

Custodial history
These files were received from Jerald Tedeschi of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Department of Medical Education in October 2010. They were maintained in that office because it has charge of the Anatomical Gift Program for the School and is responsible for burying the remains of the bodies donated for medical education purposes.
