St. Luke's Hospital was founded in 1846, by the Reverend Dr. William Augustus Muhlenberg, pastor of the Church of the Holy Communion (20th Street at Sixth Avenue). The building opened to patients in 1858 on Fifth Avenue between 54th and 55th Streets and relocated to Amsterdam Avenue between 113th to 114th Streets in 1896.
