Scope and content

This series contains material related to Dr. Popper’s attendance at hepatological conferences and other medical events, primarily but not exclusively following his retirement in 1973. Events are filed by date and the title is indicated; some folders contain more than one event, particularly during long trips. This series provides an exceptionally detailed record of both Dr. Popper’s professional achievements and the broader scope of 20th century hepatology. Events are typically represented by correspondence, programs, and itineraries; some files include abstracts of conference presentations or manuscripts by Dr. Popper and others.

Of particular note are the regular annual meetings of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in late autumn, the biennial meetings of the International Association for the Study of the Liver, and the “Basel Liver Week,” as well as numerous smaller and more specialized conferences. In addition to trips to North America and Europe, the series includes international trips to regional conferences in Latin America, Asia, Africa and Australia/New Zealand.

The series also includes a small quantity of miscellaneous notes and manuscripts, presumably taken and received at conferences, which were found loose in the events file.
